Anna Mastropolo

About the artist

Anna Mastropolo has always been most interested in color, organic shapes, patterns, and texture. Her work has evolved from highly decorative, large-scale, organic abstraction, to mid-sized works that explore the idea of human emotion with subtle color palettes and loosely representational figures.  After graduating with a BFA in Painting in 2010, her work was based primarily in organic abstraction, pattern, and decoration. Her color studies developed two years ago when she started working smaller, with an 8 x 10 picture plane. Tiny paintings, for her, capture any given moment from her larger works. Her recent work explores human emotion, and she frequently paint gestures of figures, offset with imagery representing the concepts of freedom, love, isolation, and captivity.

Why this show?

In her words:

“I have always loved Mac650 gallery since my fashion designs were exhibited in the first Trashion show at the gallery 5 years ago. When I heard about this exhibit from a friend, this piece of mine came to mind. I love the concept of this show, and created my painting with the idea of celebrating the male nude when the art world is so focused on female bodies. I have shown the piece once and it was slightly controversial, which I greatly appreciated. Art should capture the viewer and force them to look more closely, inspiring them to ask questions.”
