About the artist

Ellen King discovered her passion for the arts at Creative Arts Workshop. She gained artistic experience at Clark University, Siena Art Institute, and through self-led studies. The majority of her work has used oil paint with the goal of creating realistic works.

Studying the male body, she noticed the spectacular resemblance between the two sexes. The male form too has intricate folds, layers that beg exploration, and a beautiful and natural resemblance to a blossoming flower. Her works study how the male form embodies the natural world. Through an exploration of shape and line she has highlighted areas of the male body that mimic forms seen in nature. With her sketches she hopes to draw you to this intimate realization that we are one, male and female, nature and human, sharing this beautiful life.

Why this show?

In her words:

“I was heavily involved in the women’s and gender studies department in my undergraduate career and have immensely enjoyed exploring topics of femininity/masculinity, gender representations, and sexuality in my art. This exhibition immediately stood out to me. Questioning what makes the body masculine and finding ways to normalize male nudity and accentuate its beauty is something I do independently - however it is not until I work through these questions visually that I can mentally work through my thoughts. I hope this exhibition pushes the community to ask these same questions and perhaps find answers, just as working for this exhibition has done for me.”
