About the artist

Hannah King is a photographer and the curator of this show. Although hesitant to use the term ‘artist’ to describe herself, she does take photos, draw, and paint; but has always done so quietly, at home, for herself. Recently, having felt curious about sharing some of her own work, Ms. King took this opportunity to display some of her photographs for the first time.

Why this show?

In her words:

"This show came as a response to a photography exhibition I saw about a year ago. The show claimed to celebrate the art of nude photography, but included about 90% photos of naked women. From that moment on I have been struck repeatedly by the lack of male nudity in the arts (and beyond).

As a society, we are bombarded by images of (often sexualized) female nudity, while images of nude males are rare. The representations we do see tend to be limited and narrow in scope. Perhaps this lack of male nudity plays a role in the prevailing over-sexualization of the disrobed human form and controls nude representations of both male and female forms.

‘What can we do?’ Only through observation and discussion can we initiate change."
