Sophie Peters

About the artist

Sophie Peters makes oil paintings and is interested in the process of painting from photographic images and collages to create realistic and symbolic portraits of figures. She photographs familiar people in her life from multiple angles and often creates collages to use as a source for her paintings. This fragmentation gives her paintings a cinematic element. The paintings create dreamlike, intimate, and psychological elements that symbolize one’s sense of longing and absence. She uses layering and transparency to blend fragments together, creating a flow or juxtaposition between images and the connections between them.

Ms. Peters attended Pratt Institute of fine art and received a BFA in Painting. She studied abroad at the art college Amsterdamse Hogeschool Voor de Kunsten in the Netherlands. She focuses on oil painting and has shown work in exhibitions in NY and CT. She exhibits and sells her work at fairs and art events.

Why this show?

In her words:

“I have always been intrigued by the human figure and have explored this theme in many of my works. Portrayal of the nude figure, both female and male, is very important in my artwork because it allows a self exploration of my views of sexuality and the body. It also provides the public with a view of the beauty and fragility of the human body and portrays sexuality as a natural and instinctual concept. I love the theme of this show because I feel that male sexuality is regarded as taboo in this society. Many of my favorite and most influential artists have opened my eyes and mind to the importance of exposing the male body and expressing its natural function and sexuality.”
